Quake 4

but how would i change the fov then

OMG sorry :), I fully intended to mention how this was done but must have slipped my mind. No its not a cheat so it wont be banded by punkbuster. I only mention that aspect of cheating because I've heard many exclaim! that even creating a config (.cfg file) containing all your tweaked settings are cheats because they are not settings available in the Menu's.

Anyhow in game hit the Alt,Ctrl,Tild (~ key) and the console will pop open. Type in "g_fov 125" without the quotes. You can change it back by typing in "g_fov 90". Also you can try other numbers higher or lower to see what you would prefer. I highly suggest staying away from anything lower then 90 though ;).

why would they integrate cheating in with the game?

Its not cheating. I don't know if you just misunderstood or are one that hates game tweaks. I just say this because so many complain about these changes as being cheats usually because they don't have the knowledge to find them and implement them while there are many, many more that do make these changes so its called a competitive edge.

Edit:

Thought I'd touch on it a bit more. Also good advice for those wanting to better them selfs in the game. Lower your FPS! (this part is a real shame) The lower your fps the better you'll be able to play. There is a real play on physics with FPS... For example, If you do a rocket jump the faster your computer the higher you will jump... If you climb a wall with the plasma gun (similar gun but different name in quake 4) You will climb much higher the faster your computer. Well if you cannot afford the fastest then why is it fair you get owned by people who do? It just is sorry, fast computers are not cheating. So what you can do whether you have a fast computer or not is turn down all your graphic settings. Basically the uglier the game looks the better your chances of success. Many competitors do this very thing no matter how fast their computer is. Also there are tweaks (that I've used in Q3) where you change the model that the other person is using to a color that is easy to see, say bright fluorescent green. There are many tweaks that many will say are cheating but they will remain the ones that let out that high pitched whine after a loose because they don't want to accept things for what they are. They don't want to learn how to tweak the game. Anyhow there are many ways and Google will help. If you stumble across a site that have a bot (online cheat) available for download then keep moving. Even those who are curious, you'll get caught and nobody likes a cheater :P. Happy tweaking!

Edit again:

:P almost forgot the most important thing. JUMP! jump the whole time you are moving because this makes you much harder to hit. Also you can move faster if you jump while strafing right to left, this takes practice!... Also here is a trick I learned that works in Q4 and seems very strange, you could not do this in quake3 that I know of. If your on a map with a ramp you can run up that ramp and if you jump at the very top you seem to get a boost for some reason... Its very strange. There is a level I cannot remember the name of right now that has a ramp, on top of this small ramp is a box and on that box is a couple more smaller boxes (one is on an angle like a small ramp itself. Just behind this box is a walkway that is on the next level up. If you run up this ramp and jump you'll land on the slanted box and jump again and you'll be on the walkway. Leaving others to ponder how the hell you did it :). Its fun, give it a try.

ok thanxs that will help a lot and yeah i knew that u had to jump alot and i did that in mohaas and im not sure what the button is to bring up the fps
i think that is ctrl f but im going to try that now

how do u creat a text file

You mean a config file? You create a text file and place commands within it like the following.

unbindall
bind "RIGHTCTRL" "_attack"
bind "RIGHTSHIFT" "_speed"
bind "TAB" "_impulse19"
bind "ESCAPE" "togglemenu"
bind "SPACE" "_moveup"
bind "0" "_impulse9"
bind "1" "_impulse0"
bind "2" "_impulse1"
bind "3" "_impulse2"
bind "4" "_impulse3"
bind "8" "_impulse7"
bind "9" "_impulse8"
bind "[" "_impulse14"
bind "]" "_impulse15"
bind "`" "toggleconsole"
bind "a" "_moveleft"
bind "c" "_moveDown"
bind "d" "_moveright"
bind "e" "_impulse6"
bind "f" "_impulse8"
bind "p" "god"
bind "q" "_impulse3"
bind "r" "_impulse7"
bind "s" "_back"
bind "t" "clientmessagemode"
bind "w" "_forward"
bind "y" "clientmessagemode 1"
bind "z" "_ingameStats"
bind "~" "toggleconsole"
bind "PAUSE" "pause"
bind "UPARROW" "_forward"
set g_fov 125
set com_showfps 1
ETC. :).

This was taking from the default quake 4 config which you can find in your C:\Program Files\id Software\Quake 4\q4base. I added the fov and fps commands at the bottom to show you example of other commands rather then just simple bind commands.

After you create it in text file format click on File, Save as, and in the "file name" text field use "autoexec.cfg" With the quotes! This will save it as a .cfg file and the name "autoexec" will make sure that it is run each and every time you run Quake 4. It then must be placed in the q4base directory. You can google for console commands. As time passes the lists will become much longer I'm sure but as Quake 4 is still fairly new there is less info. I usually in my configs save all settings, ones that can be found in via Menus as well as the ones which cannot be. This is handy for when you reformat your PC, If you save it you can get your game back up and running much faster this way.

Edit:

A hell a little further explanation on use of CFG's... You can give the .cfg file whatever name you like. This makes it real handy to switch multiple settings quickly depending on the situation. To activate a .cfg file in game you would in console type. exec "name".cfg... "name" being the name which you called your config without the quotes.

Also for a much better situation you can bind keys to execute different configs. You would do this like so... Assume you have 3 configs with the following names... fast.cfg, medium.cfg, slow.cfg... You can bind them like so. In console type (or better yet in an autoexec.cfg put the bind commands.

bind p exec fast.cfg
bind o exec medium.cfg
bind i exec slow.cfg

You can have allot of fun with configs and have a fast and powerful method of switching multiple settings on the fly.

Not feeling Quake4 as much as I hoped I would, a good game but the MP isnt as good as the Quake3 MP, I guess it really depends on what you like, it isnt fast enough for me.

Its still early days and im sure that there will be some good mopds to come out for Quake4, dont really bother with the single player option, I prefer to play online.

P.S the FOV thing is really good, I had the same in quake3, you can set different FOV for different weapons.

hey thanxs blue this will help alot now that i have the config file

now i can do any thing and it will stay in the game until i take it out

is there anything else that i can do with this

hey can u tell me what this does
set image_useCache "1" // enable the below setting
set image_cacheMegs "128" // cache size for precompressed textures, 128 for 512MB systems, 196-256 for 1GB
set image_cacheMinK "2048" // might need to raise this to prevent crashing

and
set image_downSizeSpecular "1" //enables Specular downsizing setting
set image_downSizeBump "1" //enables Bump mapping downsizing setting
set image_downSize "1" //use to enable image downsizing setting
set image_downSizeSpecularLimit "512" //1024 for 256mb gfx 512 for 128mb gfx 256 for 64mb
set image_downSizeBumpLimit "512" //1024 for 256mb gfx 512 for 128mb gfx 256 for 64mb
set image_downSizeLimit "512" //1024 for 256mb gfx. 512 for 128mb gfx. 256 for 64mb
set image_lodbias "0.2" //0 default, use fractions as image quality suffers as you approach 1

i got it from

hey can u tell me what this does
set image_useCache "1" // enable the below setting
set image_cacheMegs "128" // cache size for precompressed textures, 128 for 512MB systems, 196-256 for 1GB
set image_cacheMinK "2048" // might need to raise this to prevent crashing

I couldn't say with confidence but I think its telling the engine how much memory is available for textures. so if you have 1GB you should see a benefit from setting it from 196-256 which is says. I seem to remember adding this to a Q3 config a long long time ago :D.

As for the rest I could not say for sure, sorry. I prefer sites that tell you in detail what each change does. Although I haven't looked into tweaking Quake 4 just yet so I don't know of any yet.

thanxs

so do this
set image_useCache "1" // enable the below setting
set image_cacheMegs "128" // cache size for precompressed textures, 128 for 512MB systems, 196-256 for 1GB
set image_cacheMinK "2048" // might need to raise this to prevent crashing
since i have 1gb of kingston hyper x ram

Yes, As a matter of fact second line could be.

set image_cachemegs 256

worth setting it to that and see if you find a difference.

or you could just try getting good at the game....

Your funny. First off before I learned these tricks in which I'm suggesting I was very good. Secondly Others are using these tricks which gives them an edge so its only fair that we all have that advantage. You can be God like but if your machine don't run the game as well as the next guys then you are at a disadvantage. Other techniques like Rocket Jumping, Jump strafing etc. are techniques and if they are used properly they are what make you good. Using these tricks don't mean your not good :P.

i am good at mp i kick major a$$ on mohaas but i need to work at it ok so leave me alone

Don't even give his comment a second thought. This is what I meant by people who hate others for using these tricks because they cannot figure it out for them selfs.

It is no different then any other sport where you buy the best equipment to give you that edge. It is no different then using that secret home brewed waxy solution on your skies to get you down that slop faster... Yada, yada, yada.

hey thanxs alot and im very good at mohaas cuz i can get like 60-80 kills in 20 min so do the math

Who said I couldn't figure that out. I could do that, but I'd rather just win on my own rather than use little tricks.

Well I'm not going to pretend to understand this attitude nor will I try to. You obviously fail to understand even though I explained if very clearly for you. Its more like tweaks then tricks at any rate. Also rocket jumping tricks etc. are part of the game. To learn how to rocket jump in Quake would be like learning how to powerslide in NFS. Tweaking game settings to get more FPS is not even a trick. It is what everyone does when they get a game, Just so happens in FPS physics that the higher the FPS the better you can jump/move etc.

why u r disapointed??? Quake4 rocks, i think quake4 is best fps for single player, and for multiplayer i don't know and i don't care because i don't play multiplayer. for me QUAKE4 is much better than doom3 and HL2
