Questing on Windows 7 Activation

Hey everyone,

I ordered everything for my computer and they are all coming in today.

I originally though that i could buy Windows 7 through my school as a educational version. So i ordered it. I didnt realize until it came in that it was only a Windows 7 Ultimate Upgrade disc.

So in order to activate it i need to get a product key.

What is the cheapest way to go about doing this? Can i buy Xp/Vista and upgrade with the Windows 7 Ult CD? Do they even sell xp/vista anymore?

Is the cheapest way to just pay 200$ for the windows 7 Home premium?

Thanks in advance for your help?

Cheers,
Cameron

Can't you exchange the upgrade for a retail copy? Does your school only provide upgrade disks? To legally upgrade, you are suppose to have a previous version of Windows installed. I'd check your school and see if you can do an exchange for a retail copy, or get my money back and buy a retail copy elsewhere. Microsoft sells OEM/System Builders licenses that are cheaper than the retail versions as well. If you're in the US, you can get it here.

Thanks for the response.

my college only sells the upgrade. But its only 15$. So i just wanted to get a legit copy and upgrade it to ultimate for as cheap as possible. Great link btw, ill probably do it that way.

Microsoft has most of their stuff available for download. Is the System builders version available for download anywhere? Id like to not wait 3-5 days if at all possible.

=)

No, they only have the retail version for download, unless I'm missing something.

$199 like you said. :(

I'd just return the upgrade, order the OEM copy and wait it out. Newegg's 3-day service is reliable. You could get it as soon as two days. There are less than legal methods to activate that upgrade but obviously that can't be discussed here.
