Question about anti-virus software

Hello,

I've just bought and setup a new Windows 7 computer. It came with McAfee. I don't know whether on this forum, you are permitted to recommend a good anti-virus software, but if you are, please do. Another question. Can loading more than one anti-virus/spyware/malware software cause a problem? Can they interfere with each other?

Thanks,
Louis

yes, more than one antivirus can cause issues. As for what's the best, that is a matter of opinion. My personal opinion is to download Ubuntu or another Linux and use it to browse the web. Never connect the Windows OS to the net, that is the best Antivirus available, but not many will do this.

I think AVG may be good. I see it talked about a lot on the forums here.

Yes, as Wolfeking has mentioned having more than one virus program installed will cause issues. Only one active virus program installed at any given time, however, you can have as many malware scanning programs installed as you want.

I don't recommend AVG, I personally use AVAST on all my home computers and clients systems. Microsoft Security Essentials would be the only other one I would install.

Thanks. Well, now I must confess to my ignorance. Are you saying that anti-virus software will not prevent malware or spyware and that you need both anti-virus software and anti-malware and anti-spyware software?

I dont know of a single AV out there that will stop malware.

Kaspersky used to be good at it but some has slipped past that in recent months.

Alongside your AV, I would install MalwareBytes and run a scan every few days or when your system seems to be playing up.

Ok, now I'm catching on. You need a software program to stop viruses, and you need a separate software program to stop malware. If I don't sound too stupid at this point, are malware and spyware the same thing, or do you need a third software product to stop spyware?
Thanks again,
Louis

Malwarebytes is a very good malware/spyware scanner. Run it every few days to keep your system free and clear of stuff that will slow you down and cause issues.

use avast its the best but it causes bsod on my pc for some odd reason
then use comodo for a firewall and disable windows firewall

yes it will slow your pc down tremoundosly

Thanks, I have installed AVAST, but I didn't understand what you meant. What software were you referring to when you said that it would slow down my pc?

Louis

He has issues with Avast on his systems for some reason. I have avast on all my pc's at home and install it on all my clients systems and haven't had any issues yet.
