heres the thing...im excited about making a computer, but ive recently heard about bios and rivers and everything...and my question is, i i dont really know anything about these, am i royally screwed? should i just stop? im a very smart 16 year old, and i could probably learn easily. can i please get everyones honest opinion?

bios just stands for basic input/output system, and its where everything is done to set up the essentials of your computer, regardless of OS, etc. and no, thats only reason for you to get MORE involved! if you seem overwhelmed, just take a break! you dont have to learn everything at once, and you certainly wont. just pick things up as you go! besides, bios is straight forward enough that if you know english, youre golden. when things go wrong is where the problems arise, but definitely dont give up now!

I'd give it a go. Just set aside plenty of time, and do it slowly. Read the manuals and have the Building Computers 101 guide (or something similar) with you.

Oh, and remember to install the stand offs/risers between the case and the motherboard - we've had too many people screw the motherboard directly into the case (thus frying the board, or coming perilously close) recently.

 that would be me thankyouverymuch, though not recently, that was what my first post was about back in the summer.

anyways, yeah, don't worry, learning about computers is not as hard as it seems, though ofcourse if you want to be like comp technician good then that could take a while. Just read the 101's, google things you don't know and read other people's problems and you'd learn plenty to build your own computer.

LOL, it's not just you, I don't mean anything personal (actually, I wasn't even on the forum back then, so I probably never read your post). I just recall 3 or 4 threads in the last month where people have done this ... and then about a dozen responses from other people who'd done the same!

Anyway, it's an easy thing to do, and probably about the most damaging as well, which is why I warned him specifically about that. In fact, it's the only recurring topic I can recall, that results in serious system damage while building a computer.
