question about disk defragmenter....

hi, i just decided to run disk defragmenter on my computer cause when i analyzed it, it said to defrag.... well, it got hung up on this huge video file i had, and i had to get some work done, so i stopped it. Now when I go back to defrag, it says that the drive doesn't need to be defragmented.... Did i mess something up by ending the defragmenting process early? is there anything wrong with doing that? I realize that it moves files around during the process, and now I'm worried something's messed up cause i stopped it while it was defragging.... am i screwed? what should i do? ....oh and I'm using the defragmenter that comes with windows, no third party programs

I don't think you messed anything up. The analyze has a limit to how much fragmentation it considers acceptable, before it prompts you to defrag. My best guess is that with the amount you've defraged, you've placed your fragmentation right under the limit.

Try defragmenting again.

what about that video file it got hung up on? should i delete it first? ... i back up DVDs on my comp so those are the huge files I'm talking about. It only got to 27% that time, then it was on "moving super troopers.wmv" forever...... should i not be keeping huge vid files like that? or should using my ipod as an external hd, placing the movies on there, then defragging, then putting the vids back onto the comp do the trick? thanks for your help

shouldn't matter, I've got tons of movies and I defrag with them. Try playing the movie, that would be the only thing that should have gotten messed up, if it works, you should be fine. With the defragmenter, it analyzes first before saying whether you do or don't need to defragment, but even if it says you don't need to, you can still tell it to defrag anyways, so try that too if it's bothering you

It may seem like it got hung up on a movie, but it takes a long time to defrag huge files. I would completely defrag it again.

defrag again dont use the pc time it is doing a defrag it sometimes looks like it has frozen but it wont off just wait untill it has finished it might take some time the easiest thing to do is set a certain time aside once a week to maintain your pc
