Question about external speakers.

I have a laptop that I also use as my main cpu at home, I have a monitor, mouse, keyboard etc hooked up to it. I'm hoping to get a docking station once I start school, but I am wondering if there is any way to set up external speakers without one, maybe via headphone plug?
 
Is there anything I gotta change? Because if I just plug into headphone jack they don't work, and the sound still comes from the laptop.
 
Headphone/line out... It's all the same. I don't know what computer you have, but the ones we have here at work(that also have a docking station) typcially have a headphone jack on the docking station JUST for speakers. But plugging some into your laptop should work just fine as well.
