question about Geforce 8500gt memory

i bought a Geforce 8500gt yesterday, installed it and it works fine. im running a desktop pc, windows vista home premium 1.6ghz dual core. 1 gig ram.

when i check the graphics card properties it says 512meg which is correct, but it also says 256 shared. is this card sharing my ram (vista gadget seems to think so), and if it is, how do i make it run just using its own memory only.

That should be a BIOS setting. Look for something called Video Memory/aperture or something similar. As far as I'm aware it won't use that extra 256 unless it needs it which is unlikely.

i dont see anything to do with the size of the memory used. not at my desktop so i cant check, but it has options for the graphics used, which is set to auto, and video cache is disabled.

ill ave another look when i get home
<edit> could it be that i need to change the graphics setting from auto to pci-e. could it still be letting the onboard card use ram

Just put some more RAM in. You need 2GB or RAM with Vista anyway. I wouldn't disable anything on that card, its already fairly pedestrian.

im a student so havn't got much money at the moment. i will upgrade in the summer when i get some more money. everything seems to tun all right at the moment so im just going to leave it.
