Question about hibernation.

i never shut down my laptop, instead i always put it on hibernation, i was wondering is this cuold have some side effects on my laptop.

I do that quite often myself, the only problem i could see is that if you never restart some programs that you install will never load they tray icons and such. Also some spyware programs load themselves into the memory on restart so you may be infected and not know it but it would probably also be easyer to remove them. Other than that as long as your computer doesn't have any trouble doing it (older laptops hate hybernation and lock up when you try to do so) more power to you.

I have read that it's best to reboot at least once every 24 hours in order to launch some programs that might get shut down and not restarted. Also, for some reason, XP does seem to "reset" itself with a reboot. Once a day should do it.

Hibernation is pretty much the same thing as standby, except the windows copies the files to the hard drive instead of the RAM.

As others have said, one of the effects of doing this is that programs that require a restart wont be fully operational until you do restart. And also, the longer you go without rebooting, the slower your computer will be since it has files stored in the memory that it doesnt need. I would only use hibernation if you intend on using the computer later that day, and i would shut it off at night.

Yea that right ur system will keep all the temp files and stock up the hdd. it will get slower with time n it may get worst......i keep my system on standby for whole day n shut it off in night..Some of my frds complained of problems with Xp when they used Hib. ..i dont want take any risk.
it should be used in right times only...like to save battery...:)

I turned hibernation and stand by off, I'm either using my computer or its shut off. Hibernation can be nice if you are moving you laptop to a new location, ie (home to work) and then you wont have to boot or lose any of your open information... otherwise... turn it off...

It's always good to turn it off at some point. Clearing up all your tasks and even your pagefile, etc. A cold boot would do you and your resources good. :D

Don't do that. Shut down completely after use. It may get overheated. I had suffered the consequence already. See my sig. So many computers, right? all spoil due to overheating, but i am very stubborn. Never learn from my lesson.

I leave my desktop running as long as I can, and will usually restart/shut down maybe once a week, at most. I really have no problems. If some programs need to be started, I just click Start > Log Off (NOT SWITCH USER), and this will shut down my account, and when I log on again, it starts all my startup programs again. I really don't have any problems with Windows or my comp as a result of this.

i used to leave my comp on but was always slow with the progs that i was using so i find it best to shut down but depends on what your doing tho. save a bit of electricity and than, sad thought but i dont wanna live on no boat haha :D
