Question about host files

I brought a computer home from my workplace, it was connected to the network there and now I want it to work at home, this is what I was told I nee dto do to connect to the net, \


Change tcp/ip settings to obtain automatically - same for dns. Also,
rename hosts file to hosts.old.

I did the TCP/IP thing, but how do I change host files?
 
I believe they are talking about files which may be served or hosted on a network. Files which wont be available when you bring your PC home.
