Question about how to use a microphone to record

My computer has a microphone jack on the front. I would like to buy a microphone to do some recording. Do the microphones work the same way the CB microphones work? I mean do you have to push a button on the mic or keyboard in order to record or do they operate like a telephone? Thanks!

All you have to do is talk in it, no buttons to press. Although you need sound recording software open and recording to do it.
