Question about i7 3770k

Just got my i7 3770k today, together with a gigabyte Z77X UD3H. I've got a couple of questions
-What's your average temperature at idle? I'm using CM hyper 212 evo and lowest everage temperature is about 34-36. However, when running just a few light programs, I'm averaging 45-50. I haven't have the time to really stress the CPU. Is this normal for this CPU?
-I was using i7 870 before this and the clock speed varies according to the load. When the PC is idle, the speed is around 1.7ghz, only hitting the 2.93 mark at full load. My i7 3770k is constantly at 3.9ghz. How do I change that? I can probably figure that out if i play with the settings but I'm exhausted atm.

Your temps will probably go down when you get the processor to slow down. Right now it is running hot I think. Are you running overclocked any? 45-50 is high for a few programs. Stock it should be cooler than my 2600k which stock is in the upper 30s at idle and upper 50s at load.

What you need to do is go into the BIOS and enable speedstep. That will lower your speeds on idle and cause it to run cooler.

@wolfeking I'm just running at stock atm though it's always at the turbo boost speed of 3.9ghz

I'll see what I can come up with in the bios. Been doing some test rendering to see the performance of the CPU and I was quite surprised to see the maximum temperature to be 58C, at 3.9ghz and 100% load. Will try OCing soon :)

Got some good temps there. I'd disable turbo boost and set the multiplier at 3.9ghz. Probably could get there at stock voltages.

Crap, there was some issues with my temperature reading just now, it was actually 63 at 100% load @3.9ghz. Anyway, I'm currently running 4.4ghz during rendering. The temperature is about 74C at 100% load. Is that a good temperature? Or should I get something like a corsair H60?

74 should be fine. You don't want to be much higher though.

And if yours is a bit of test on hot, then that is definately hotter than SB. my 2600k is running 4300MHz right now and is 65* more or less under load and we are using the same cooler.

if that's just from a little while at 100% then i'd back off some, the longer it runs the air will get warmer and the temp may rise. I'd just check if it is stable with any less voltage and that wold drop the temp a degree or two, and probs drop it to 4.2 for everyday usage.

Its more then the TIM that Intel started putting between the CPU and the heat spreader. Alot of it has to do with being 22nm. Smaller distancences and smaller contact patch to disapate heat. They can change the TIM but it will only help slightly, the biggest part of it is a 22nm. problem.

I've been rendering for the past 4 hours. Temperature was constantly 72-74. It's definitely hotter than SB, seeing many forum posts and reviews stating the same. I'll only be running at 4.4ghz when rendering. Daily usage, I'll run at stock, even for gaming since it's more than enough. I was thinking of selling my CM hyper 212 and getting a closed loop water cooler but after seeing some review, it seems that unless I go for a high end one, there will be little difference. Any comment or suggestion?

I finally figured out how to enable EIST. I had to disable turbo boost for it to work. Kinda weird. Anyway, CPU is now at 1.6ghz when basic programs are running. Temperature is still high, about 38-40. I just finished rendering a while ago so maybe the temperature will drop further.

That temperature is normal..No need to worry..When the temp goes above 65C will be dangerous...Where u bought your processor? My processors all are made from Malaysia....
