Question about my mobo

I've got an old Dell Optiplex GX240, stock mobo. Supposedly it only supports a 2.6GHz CPU, but I've found recently that the number is actually 2.8GHz, with 512 cache and I think a 400MHz FSB. That would lead me to believe that the fastest supported CPU is the "SL7EY" Nothwood model.

However, when I put a newer SL6WF (2.4GHz) with Hyperthreading in to test it (It's damaged I think), it recognized the dual threads as CPU0 and CPU1. Does that mean that this supports HT? If it does, and I pop in a model with a 533MHz bus rating, will it downclock or just not work?

edit: also, is specs list a max of 1GB of RAM, but all intel 845 chipsets seem to support 2GB. Could dell's specs be wrong here, like they were with the CPU?

According to crucial.com, that machine only supports up to 1gb of memory using 2 sticks of 512mb of pc133 memory. I would not waste any money upgrading thie machine, its too old. Save your money and buy a new one.

^ I know, but according to intel's specs on the chipset, it supports up to 2GB. That's what's got me confused.

I'm asking because I have a friend who has a bunch of old parts like that, but if I'm for sure already running at nearly the maximum specs of this machine, there's not much point. I don't want to pull this clamshell beast apart again if nothing's going to happen :(

I won't personally be using it once I get my rig built, but it'll be set up in the living room for everyone to use. I live in a house with six 18-20 y/o guys, so that means internet mostly and some light gaming...WoW type stuff probably. 12sky is popular with them. The SL7EY will handle that I suppose, but the RAM could be a problem...

The video card sucks too but i'm sure I can find a half-decent one that'll fit. It uses low profile AGP 4x cards. :(
