Question about new GPU

So the story goes: I was playing CSS when the screen froze and jagged lines occurred across it. I attempted to restart the computer thinking "oh great, my graphics card went out..." I push the power button and everything starts up, but there is no output from the HDMI to the monitor. So I remove my graphics card and change the display to go off of the VGA output which is from the motherboard's onboard video. This works just fine. The display looks slightly different but everything else is working properly.

So now I was at the point where I was certain my graphics card had gone out due to the lines across the screen and the fact that there was no output from the HDMI.

I just had delivered today an HIS 5770 IceQ Turbo which I just installed, but when I turn on the PC, same thing happens, no output from HDMI to the monitor. The graphics card fan is running just fine, it is properly seated in the PCIEx16 slot and the 6-pin power connector is hooked up properly. Once again, the VGA output still works from the onboard video.

So now I am lost. I do not know if it is possible for just a PCIEx16 slot to stop working, everything else works just fine, I can do everything I would normally do on my computer (except game) on the motherboard's onboard video.

I also have updated and installed the most recent driver's for this card and still nothing.

If anyone has any advice or if I am just being naive and overlooking something I would really like to know! Thank you.

It sounds like your PCI slot is hooped, because even if it was an issue with your power connection you would get a message on your monitor telling you. Maybe look at your slot, is there any physical damage that you can see like burn marks maybe? That sucks, especially since your new card just arrived. Good luck.

make sure all settings in the bios are correct. that probably isn't the problem but it never hurts to check.

Sounds like a MOBO. I have no idea how old your MOBO is but if it is still within warranty call ASUS and explain the situation, they are great. If it is out call them anyways, tell them how much you love their products and ask for help. They are in Fremont CA and a local number is easy to find.

I will be trying this soon. I was able to get a signal from HDMI to monitor so things are looking up. I've been uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers hoping to get somewhere because it still says there are no drivers configured for my new ATI device...

Thanks for the input guys.

Alright well I've got it figured out. After attempting to update the driver's about a dozen times for the new card, it finally worked.

Driversweeper not necessary, it stuffs you up. use catalyst install manager from the new files to uninstall the old version, reboot, then install new version and then reboot again. works every time.

Less 3rd party software = better.

i have never had any problems with it. takes like 20 seconds.

I just ued Progams and Features in the Control Panel to uninstall the old drivers. It was strange because it was like the first driver install of the new hardware didn't work, I had to uninstall that, download the latest driver AGAIN and reinstall and reboot. But anyways it's workin great now!

Most issues arise when you use driver sweeper while changing graphics cards, and not reinstalling the OS which i eventually had to do because driver sweeper ****ed up catalyst and windows. :o

i always completely uninstall everything, including catalyst, and run driversweeper then. like i said, i haven't had any real problems. actually, if i remember correctly, i think i had problems when updating drivers for my hd 5770 when i DIDN'T run driversweeper. i kept having issues that were present in the older version which were supposed to be fixed in the newer one and i stopped having the problems when i did a full uninstall and then ran d.s.

then again, i could just be delusional :P

If you use catalyst install manager to uninstall catalyst, there's no need to use driversweeper. I believe that catalyst does leave some registry entires in there, but that's so you can properly install the newest version. A foundation, if you will.

Using driver sweeper or any driver cleaner for that matter removes these and catalyst throws a tantrum about it... eventually windows decided to pack it up as well.
