Question about RAID.

I just got 16TB (4x4TB) HDD's. My question is; Can I RAID 8TB (2x4TB) in Striping, then the other 8TB (2x4TB) in Striping, but then RAID the 2x8TB in Mirroring? It's kinda confusing, I just confused myself, lol.

FYI, all drive are the same.

Yes, that is what a nested RAID array is.

You would set up two RAID 0 arrays, and then put those two arrays in RAID 1, making a RAID 01 array

You could alternatively do RAID 10, which is the same, but you put the drives in RAID 1, so the drives are mirrored, then RAID 0, where they are striped.

Both will work identically to each other, so it doesn't matter. Why you would use one over the other is if:

a. Your RAID controller supports one but not the other
b. Your RAID controller can build one array on the fly without a complete rebuild but not the other

Thank you, Aastii. Your always the best!

you can never have enough hard drive space. im using 2 x 3tb hd for dvd's and videos only. then another 2tb drive for music pics and software/games installs. then my 256gig ssd for os and games/programs. i also havea 1tb drive for an external solution. im currently at about 67% usage overall, so im in need of a different solution soon. not too sure which direction i should go in as far as that goes, but i think its going to be pricey?

That's a nice amount of hdd memory you got there!
What do you need it for? 1T is enough for me :P (+120gb ssd)
How on earth do you get by with 1.12 TB of space? For my desktop I have just over 1.5TB of usable space (not counting the 40GB of Linux space that is not accessible from windows), and it is almost completely full. I would love to have a few 3TB drives to do RAID 10 on like the OP is asking about. Would not trust 4TB just yet, but 3TB should be fine.
