i installed a gig of ddr 333mhz ram into my mobo. When i restarted the comp i got a 164: memory size error. I went into the bios and did a "save and exit", it restarted but its only regestering 256mb. Is it something wrong with the stick or am i doing something wrong, or is it something wrong with the mobo, according to sandra sisoftware i should be able to upgrade to 1.5gb

okay the other ram stick is a 256mb 333mhz ddr stick. I think that the stick is ECC/Parity. The 1gb stick i got off ebay for like 55 shipped, its 333mhz 1gb, non ECC/Parity, no brand name.

no brand name.. i must say..u do get what u pay for..
& yes a motherboard can support up to 4 GB of ram..now maybe more..
try this.. read the ECC/parity compatibility answer... that might be the problem since the one u just bought isn't ECC/parity

i think its te size o the stick that causes touble.. can your mobo handle 1Gb sticks,.. or is 512Mb per slot the maximum?

o0o yeah.. im guessing ur motherboard has 3 memory slots.. being it has the ability to hold three 512mb supporting 1.5gb

okay i just want to make sure of this. How sure are you that its the boards fault, that it wont recognize the stick, from several resources i found on google it said to go into bios and do a "save setting and exit", and that it isnt anything to worry about. I did this and it still didnt recognize the stick, therefore I imagine that if the motherboard was built 4 years ago when 1gb sticks of ram werent available that the mobo wont recognize the size, cuz it does recognize that theirs a new stick of ram in there but just not the size of it. Also when i installed my other 256 stick (to get to 512) it never said the memory size error.

thats where i got it from, at the bottom it does say "mother board must be able to take 1gb in each slot" and thus again thats where i think the problem lies in, being that the board itself was only made to take 1 gig, but 4 years ago when the highest level stick was 512mb.
