question about ram

my question is why does it mention the mhz when you go out to buy some ram. I thought the whole point of sd and ddr ram is that they are synchronized with the cpu. Should the mhz be "whatever you cpu is"? Also how can you over clock the ram, wouldn't that desynchronize it? what am i missing here, thx guys.

Only held true when the memory controller was in the northbridge on the motherboard. All modern CPU, the memory controller is on the processor.

hmm.. i don't think you understood my question... let me ask a different one. When you buy ram from the store and it says "x" megahertz on it, what is that referring to? the speed at which it processes or the speed at which it COULD process at. You know what i mean? because the ram is synchronized with the cpu right?

Like say use PC3 12800/DDR3 1600. The first number is the data transfer rate, the second number is the mhz it runs at.

I guess that is a marketing strategy to sell. I only focus on which memory version supports.

The megahertz is the speed that the memory has to transfer data to the CPU.
