question about swapping out old CD-Rom drive

Hi,

I'm swapping out a CD-ROM drive from a really old computer (10 yrs. old) and installing it into a Compaq Presario desktop computer which is maybe 5 years old. I noticed that although the power cable and grey ribbon cable connect correctly to the drive the side screws do not match up at all. The newer computer has the green snaps.

My question is that is it safe to still use this old cd-rom drive assuming I can correctly situate it so doesn't slide back and forth or should I buy a new or refurbished one which sits correctly?

I just don't want anything negative happening to the newer computer ;)

Does the cdrom from the new computer have attachable plastic "sliders" or special screws that will allow you to mount it in the newer case as the original? If so, just detach from the one to be replaced and put on the one to be mounted.
 
no, they do not. as of right now, i just want to run a restore cd and get the computer back to normal. after that i was thinking to just buy a new cd-rom drive.

is it safe to use this cd-rom drive for the time being?
 
If you can get it to fit, it should work fine. Dont know about buying a refurbished CD drive. You can get new DVD burners for 20 bucks.
