Question about swapping the Core Duo.

Does anybody know what Core processors are compatible?

I need to get a new laptop, and I'm thinking about getting the cheapest Core processor I can, then swapping it later on when the prices come down.

I know if I get the Core 2 Duo T5500 667FSB that I can swap in anything up to the T7600.

But could I also get a Core Duo T2350 533FSB and swap in the T7600 later? Could I get a Celeron M 440 533FSB and swap?

The laptop uses the 945GM chipset for all the processors...that's what makes me wonder if it would just adjust the FSB to 667 when you put in a higher processor... or if it is set to one FSB or the other.

Does anybody have any insight?

Thanks.

Good question........Dell, of course, has their BIOS locked, which really sucks. Perhaps a laptop brand like iBuyPower or CyberPowerPC would have it unlocked. I don't know if you would need BIOS unlocked for it to change FSB speed.

The thing is...all of these processors are currently available as options on the laptop - from the Celeron to the T7600. So would it be safe to assume that the same (current) BIOS would support any of these processors? Or is that not a good assuption?

I know I can go from a Core Duo (the one I have now), to the faster Core 2 Duo since they use the same chipset, but im not sure about the Celeron.

Because the T7600 is a $500 option, and in a few years you could get one for $30. I did the same thing a few years ago with a different laptop. That's "saving your pennies."

Well not for $30, lol, but it would be lower. But also by then they will have better processors out, and the C2D may become obsolete and hard to find for cheap.
