question about thermal paste application

Hey guys quick one.

When re-applying thermal paste it can be a bit tricky to get my beastly large noctua nh-c14 cooler. Because of this it's difficult to land it perfectly on the cpu after putting thermal paste down, which usually means theres some fumbling contact between the two before I can actually get it seated properly and locked down.

My question is, would this cause issues or effect temps? I know that generally the heatsink spreads the compound out over the cpu when you place it down but if it touches the thermal grease a bit then gets readjusted quickly and reseated properly would that cause issues in temps?

I try my best to get it down the first time but god is it hard. Also I'm seeing that my core temps can vary about 5 degrees. I've read this is normal but is there anything that can be done? My last thermal job looked pretty good when I took it off again so it wouldn't have been uneven distribution. Just wondering

(PS. Running p95 atm and hitting about 60C @4.3GHz. specs in sig. good? bad?)

(PSS. I have a thread in the networking section that is unanswered as of yet. hint hint ;D )

For a air cooler those temps are perfectly acceptable, I think the only thing that could help you would be cable management and more fans.

i would say maybe lower it down to 4ghz, when under load those temps might go a little too high if they're at 60c idle.

Im assuming that Prime95 is 'p95' so those are the load temps for a 4.3ghz i7. 60c is pretty good for an air cooler considering it is oc'd.

Since it's a paste and needs time to cure I wouldn't think it would be an issue as long as it's an even coat and covers the whole thing.

that makes sence, didn't catch that, but then the temps are pretty dang good actually.

temps seem to be increasing slowly. since posting I find that I'm idling betweenf 38-45ish. do you think its because its curing or is this a sign the thermal job wasnt up to snuff?

Honestly if you have doubts about your thermal paste application just try it again. You only get better with practice. My i7 idles around 35-38 with stock clock speeds and a Cooler Master Hyper 520, just some food for thought.
