Question about video card and power usage.

I just hold of a ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 256mb.... i need to get a 6 pin adapter to hook it to my power supply...i only have a 300 watt power supply, i ran some power consumption calculators and with the card most were under or around 300 watts..my question is can i safely run the card for say short amounts of time with nothing else going or can i not use it at all and have to save up for a new power supply?

see if it came with a 2pin molex to 6pin dongle, i doubt it would work since thats a power hungry card but i would gve it a try, it could boot um but everything will run low, and if i did run the card wouldnt be running as good as it could, try buying a new one

I'd say it could be ran on a quality 350w at the very least. But remember that power is not the only consideration, current, or ampere, need also be looked upon. The 1950pro needs around 30 amps on the +12v line, this specification can be found on the side of the PSU. Once again it can run safely at a slightly lower spec but not much below.. 25 and up may be sufficient.

A 300w with less than 25a isn't a good counterpart to the 1950pro, you'd be looking at several mis-posts, and if it ever did manage to boot into Windows it would be unstable to say the least. This is all speculation on my part. A 8600gts gives around the same performance as a 1950 pro and only requires a 300-350w PSU with 18a on the +12v, a likely canidate if you don't wish to upgrade your PSU, but seeing as you already have the PRO I'd just get a new PSU

EDIT: I edited.

this is the one im looking at since i can afford it right now..its 465 watts.(box says recommended 450watts for the card).the +12 line has 28amps will that be adequate?

Some Specs:
Dual Fans
Gold Plated connectors
Quad protection
1 sata connector
Pci-E connector
20+4 pin connector
4 power connectors
+3.3v 32a
+5v 32a
+12v 28a
-5v 0.5a
-12v 0.5a
+5vsb 2a
