Question about voltage

Hello, I have yet another stupid question...

I have the computer in my sig which is a Pentium 4 running at 1.728V and my father has a Pentium 4 too but its running at 2.25V. I was wonder why that was the case. I know his has 2.66mhz while mine is 1.7mhz, but besides that I do not know much about his computer, it was a pre-built.

If the faster model isn't being oced the power requirements for that model are simply different resulting in the higher default setting. One of the main reasons for the older P4 cpus to run warmer then others is due to having a higher demand for power. The four wire 12v cpu feed seen on newer boards started with the P4 line for that reason later moving into new board designs. The Core 2 Duos/extremes and even newer AMD models now run with a smaller demand. The dual core models will see one core go idle when there is no activity needing cpu time.

it is also possible that you are using a different core than he is. the pentium 4 had more than one architecture, which will use a different voltage. but as everyone else said, it could also be just that it is set to a higher speed

isn't it pretty obvious? faster processor takes more voltages? need it to be asked?

Not necessarily! The newer Core 2 models are dual core and seem to run on less. A great deal sepends on the wattage output for the cpu whether something like 65w or 89w. The 6000+ X2 3ghz AMD AM2 model is a 125w cpu. That will be a bit faster then the current 3500+ 65w 939 model. But it's for a work horse build.
