Well i have an upgrade disc from campus for windows 7 ultimate. I have my parts ordered for a new PC build and they will be here in a few days. I was originally gonna use my old vista oem disc for this new build and upgrade it to windows 7 with the disc i got from school, but found out that u can only use oem discs once :(.. So, im going to have to purchase windows 7. My question is, i will purchase windows 7 home premium oem, can i use my upgrade disc i got from school to upgrade it to windows 7 ultimate? or do i have to buy the retail version for the upgrade to work?

You can do a Full install of Windows 7 with a upgrade disk.
Google it for directions, many sites show a couple ways it can be done.

you can use your OEM vista disk, just when it ask you for a key, proceed with the key blank. It will install as a trail copy of windows. Then you will be able to use the upgrade disk to upgrade to 7.

or you can start strait off from 7, and leave the key blank the first time. Then go back in and install as an upgrade, and then go in and delete the "windows old" file.

I will look into this

so i would insert my upgrade disc first and install it , restart and do the same process again? then delete the "windows old" file (wherever that is. lol)

i have yet to purchase windows 7 oem, i only have the oem disc of windows vista and i have the upgrade disc from school for windows 7 ultimate.

Thanks for the fast replies

Don't do any of that. Just take your Windows 7 upgrade and install it. Don't put the key in. Once it's all installed, go under the system properties and insert the key.

yes, the first is the easiest. insert the 7 upgrade disk, install (dont put the key in), and then restart the computer and install as an upgrade. This time you will put the key in.

The windows old folder will be listed in the mycomputer after the upgrade install. Its a folder that holds the user data from the first install. you will just delete this folder since you have no data to be in the folder.

edit: voyager, that didnt work with mine. I had to install and then reinstall to get it to accept the key.

Its worked for me before. But it has kicked the key back saying the installed version didnt match too. So its worth a try to see before you do a second install.

Ok awesome guys, thanks. You just saved me $100 lol. :). I'll get pics up of the beast towards the end of the week when I get it built.
