Question about Windows and Mac, etc.

A few friends were talking about computers the other day, and I felt pretty stupid because I had trouble following the most simple conversation. My ignorance on the topic of computers astounds me sometimes, but then there's more to life than that, right? Anyway, to my question: I am aware of Windows, and that it is produced by Microsoft, and owned by Bill Gates. But the other operating systems out there -- what about them? I am faintly aware of mac and apple, however i couldnt explane whether apple owns mac or visaversa, point is, where can I read up on my terminology in a... newb friendly environment?

Basicly there are three types, Windows, Apple/Macintosh, and Linux/unix.

apple and mac are the same company, but their nickname is apple cause thats their logo

there are various other os'es for special applications. like PalmOS and stuff like that
