Normally I would just take this to PMs but I suspect some other people are curious as well. In your sig you have this
p4 Northwood 3ghz. Oc'd to 3.8ghz,fsb 250mhz
1024MB Corsair (TWINX1024-4000PRO) PC4000
then you have this
Saphire ATI 9200se Radeon 128MB (not a big game fan).
My question is why have you OC'd to 3.8GHz and have TwinX PC4000 RAM if you aren't a big game fan? I've tossed around a few posibilities but I didn't think any were right so I figured I might as well ask :)

he he, you know what they said about curiosity.

I do a lot of data mining, well it more text mining actually. I’m working on a project to extract cytogentic mutation details from within known cancers, so far mainly leukaemia’s, from the abstracts and full texts of published papers. I pull papers down from pubmed (an online databank of most medical papers since the early 60’s).

and send millions of reg exp's across them looking for word patterns and matchs. It pulls out the syntax that relates to the cytogenetic breakpoints that can be seen in some cancers. This is dumped in a db, which can later be used (hopefully) to aid research. I really should get around to designing a web front for the db, but that not really my goal just yet.

The project was running as part of a group at the Sanger Institute Cambridge,

http://www.sanger.ac.uk

But I left there quite a while ago. I maintain the project in my personnel time, of which I get precious little.

Anyway the mining is done using perl reg exp’s and at the volume we’re talk about it become hugely processor hungry stuff. I don’t have the luxury of the sangers farm, or their new blades anymore so I have to do it from home.

Hope that clears things up for you.

Oh, and I should be picking up a 6800gt soon, so there goes more of my free time.

i'm sure i could get a bit more out it if i was more agressive. But i like to keep temp low, i need this processor for a while longer yet. It idles at 38, and loads about 58-59. Which is ok.

Yes, I know all about PERL's reg exps and the processor dependancies of them (worked in network services dept, maintaining PERL scripts that kept track of all their network devices) the server was almost perpetually at full load.
Hope that clears things up for you.
That it does thanks :). It was very confusing seeing an overclock that high and the RAM in an apparent non-gaming PC.

Respect

Man I have great respect for you. In fact I beleieve that technology should be used for such beneficial things. You are one of the "few" that actually try to change our world.

Hey thanks for that.

You know anyone here can make a bit of a difference, just donate some of your idle computer time to a worthy cause.

Just think about all that wasted computer power and time sitting on your desktop. Now multiply that by the number of computers in the world and you begin to see the potential benefit that harnessing that power could have for research. So why note donate your computer time.
You don’t have to do anything except download a small file, and leave your computer running (which is a good thing anyway). The programs can be set to come on like screen savers, or to run in the background.

There are several one to choose from. I recommend

http://www.grid.org
(you can select from several different research projects)

http://folding.stanford.edu/
(You can see protein folding which is cool, overclocker will be used to this app)

Please try to donate time. It doesn't cost anything.

Actually i hope it wont be considered spamming if i also post this to a new thread, if anyone minds then do feel free to tell me to bugger off
