Question for those who use AVAST

I'm giving it a try - their free version.

I just found out that AVG Free currently doesn't protect for root viruses. I'm running my first scan - and it's noticably slower scan than AVG free.

1) Is AVAST Free good enough as a standalone product to protect a personal PC?

2) Is it live actively protecting me from viruses - or does it just scan when you do a computer scan?

3) Will it auto-scan like I'm used to with AVG?

4) Anything else I should know about avast - being that this is a new product for me?

Avast has always been great for me for virus protection. It also has prevented me from installing rootkits, trojans, and malware automatically. I also use Spybot Search & Destroy, SuperAntiSpyware, and Spyware Blaster in addition to Avast. As a result, I've had nothing bad on my PC for at least 5 years.

Avast Free will not auto-scan your PC for viruses. You need to start the scan yourself.

EDIT: I got sick and tired of Avast version 5's borking my system. Repeated screwups with hard drive throughput, ESENT errors every few minutes in Event Viewer, having to reinstall chipset drivers and Java again and again... so I uninstalled Avast and installed Avira AntiVir Personal.

Should have done it years ago! The latest Avast sucks.
