I presently have a P4 running at 1.7 Ghz with 512 MB of RAM. it is about 5 years old so I decided to buy a new tower. I am going to buy an AMD system.

Does anyone have any info on the AMD Athlon Dual Core X2 processor
(AM2 X2 4800+). Will it be faster than my P4/1.7Ghz system. I'll have 3 or 4 GB DRR2-800 Ram. Is the 4800 a decent system

im on an AMD system now and i am upgrading in 8 days time, but i wil be moving to INTEL now as thier chips are so far ahead of AMD;s now, and with especially INTEL now matyching on price with AMD im deffo going down the intel road now, as for the AMD chip you mentioned thats was my first choice but after days of research i moved to the e2180 overclocked, but now ive widenend my budget to a e6600

Any CPU you'll find will absolutely destroy a P4, don't worry about that. I'd probably go with intel, simply because they overclock much better; you can turn a cheapass Pentium Dual-Core into a monster (well, a monster considering the price you pay...) If you aren't planning on doing any OCing, AMDs offer a good price-to-performance ratio, and as oscar said, AMD or Not you'll notice a MASSIVE increase in performance.

Yes the X2 4800 is a fine processor and will walk on the P4. A old XP Athlon 1800 or 2000 socket A would beat that P4
