question on creating maps

Hello!

I hope somebody can help me on this one.

My problem is the following:

I need to make a geographical map of europe and north asia. In this map I need to make a layer with locations I have in a data file (I've got coordinates). The maps need to be used for a presentation so they just need to look nice and display the information correctly (just dots with different colours will do)

My question:

Can this be done with Google earth (I couldn't find it out)
Or is there a better other program you can recommend.

Thanks a lot

I don't know about Google Earth, I can't get it with my modem. Do you need a flat projection like an atlas or round earth?

I would find an online map or scan an atlas and add dots in a graphic application that does layers such as Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop, PhotoStudio etc. If you don't need dots in a separate layer then there are lots of cheap paint applications. "Paint" on your pc will do that.

Thanks for your reaction

but the problem is I have a lot of data and I only have coordinates, so in one way or another I need to get the dots on a more or less accurate location.

How big (in pixels) do you intend to make this map? How accurate to nearest x kms do you need to show locations? Is it for printing or the Web?

Unless you make the map huge there is a limit to how accurate you can show points. Online maps are designed to fit on a web page ie less than 1024 pixels wide for any given map. The resolution will be poor, or if zoomed in enough will show too much detail.

Presumably your coordinates are in longitude and latitude. I Googled "world map location longitude latitude" and got quite a few hits (3 million actually). I just tried mapquest.com and input some coordinates which were in France. I got a small map covering maybe 40miles x 30miles. How are you going to put that on your big map?
