Question on Video Card and Mobo Compatibilty

Hello CF Forumers,

I am here to ask how would I know if a video card is compatible to my mobo/system. I am currently using the Asus Crosshair Motherboard and my friend gave me a EVGA e-Geforce 8800 GTS 640. I installed it and installed the driver, everything looks fine. There is 2 games that I play that doesn't require an high performance video card to play with but every so often the game freezes. Originally I was using 2 PNY 7900GS 128. I am running a 700W PS. I feel that the card is very glitchy. I would like to ask is there anything on my side I can do about it. Any suggestion would help. Thank you
 
Did you uninstall the old drivers before you installed the new ones?

It's very important to remove all traces of old drivers before you install
the new ones.

I had this issue and I could not figure it out for the longest time. I ran
Driversweeper in safe mode and removed all my display drivers, then
rebooted normally and installed the new drivers. No issues since.
 
Bodaggit23, Thanks for your opinion. I actually didn't uninstall the old drivers from my old card and just installed the new one over it. I would give that a try and see how it is. If I come by the same problem again I'll repost it here to ask for other solutions. Thanks again
 
Bodaggit23, I tried your method from uninstalling old drivers and delete all driver for old and new video and reinstall the new updated drivers for the card and games still freezes. It doesn't just freezes the game. When it freezes the game it also freezes my whole computer. If I am not playing a game everything is fine. What could be the problem? Video Card not compatible with my board or not enough power?
 
Your friend is very generous, but I wouldn't rule out a bad card. Why would he give away a nice card like that?

Which video driver version are you using? When I bought a
new 8600GTS, I could not use the current drivers that were
available for the GeForce cards. I have to use an older version, otherwise there were strange plaid looking patterns on the screen.

Point: Try older drivers, or if you're using old drivers already, try the newest ones.
 
Friend got the card from work. Surprisingly they have these card where he works at. I am using the most current updated drivers. The version number is 182.50. I tried reading about the problems else where and tried almost every possible method there is to fix this problem but it still not working. I guess I would have to try an old version of the driver and see what happens. Thanks again
 
i heard rumors that the 182 drivers were quite unstable, so i moved mine down to 179 and it solved my glitchy screen problems
