Question re: V8 CPU cooler

I have been procrastinating on a CPU cooler - was planning on ultimately getting a Noctua Cooler - b/c I liked the idea of fastening from above while the board was already installing - but not urgent - b/c I wasn't overclocking - and I don't want to spend the money. Basically - I was procrastinating on buying it - while I used my stock Cooler that came with the core i7 920.

Just saw on Newegg's Black Friday add that they have a sale on the Coolermaster V8 Cooler for 40 bucks. I know it's a good CPU cooler - and at that price - it's kindof tough to pass up on. But you have to install it on the board before installing and can't remove it w/o removing your Motherboard.

My only question is - will I ever have to take this thing off my motherboard during hte next few years to clean - or can I get by just blowing some air in it periodically. My only other experience with CPU coolers was a Dell that I ignored for 4 years - and it was mainly just a heatsink with a hood and a fan out the back of the PC anyway.

I'd like to get a CPU cooler sooner or later - but I don't want to buy this one if it's going to be a headache to keep clean over the long run.

What? You can easily remove it wouthout removing it from your motherboard. The only part attached to the motherboard is the backplate(which is held in place by a foam sort of tape).

However, personally i wouldnt really recommend the V8 even with it on sale, its not that great of a cooler once you throw noctua's,the megahalems,the TRUE,and IFX-14, and similar into the mix

I watched a couple installations on Youtube around 8 min screwing onto MOBO and it looks to be screwed on from the back of the Motherboard.

Hence you'd need to remove the MOBO to get the cooler off your board - unless I'm missing something here. Ideally - I'd like to be able to remove the cooler while my MOBO is in my case. Right now - I'm still running my crappy stock cooler - and it's warmer than I'd like - but I'm in no hurry to spend 80 bucks on a cooler right now. Got other things I'd rather save and spend on.

40 bucks - I could probably swing right now though if I didn't have to worry about a cooler for the life of my PC - or having to remove this thing from my case to clean every couple of months. That would bug me.

Oh thats right, forgot CM uses that really stupid mount method for their heatsinks.

The high fin density and lower speed fans of the V8 will cause it to attract more dust than you would imagine, i have coolermaster r4's(same fan as in the V8) on my rad, and they build up dust on them about 2-3 times faster than my three scythe slipstreams on the other side of my rad.
 
but still, its a great cooler. it keeps my phenom II 940 oc'ed to 3.7 at around 27c idle 39c 100% load. for that price, its worth it. get an airduster or vaccum to clean fan every couple months.

theres no reason you would ever have to take it out to clean it
 
Cool,

I've got a C0 step and my CPU runs kinda warm. Idles around 50 degrees @ 45 W - and when I'm gaming / watching TV on second monitor - I can get the temps up to 68 degrees - and that's far from maxing out the CPU usage.

I really could use a new CPU cooler - and sounds like this would be a good value to drop my temps for a reasonable price.

Anybody else have opinions - feel free to chime in - I'll probably order this either today or tomorrow - unless there's some reason I should avoid it - but seems like a good deal right now.

How long have you owned yours? just curious?

Yeah those temps seem fairly low for an 3.7ghz phenom. My 955be stays at about 33c idle and about 51c wiht prime95 for 2hrs. This is with it oc'd to 3.8ghz. At stock clock I get idle of 28-30c and full load of like 46-48c.
 
i just built it in july, its just the mobo sitting on my desk, no case, and i used shin etsu tim. but my room temp is about 60f right now, which is like 15c, i think that also helps
 
I have had mine for a year now...my wife bought my case and V8 for me last Christmas. I really like it, works great for me and my processor.

You will have to remove the motherboard for mounting. Unless you have a cut out in your motherboard tray like some cases do. You can always cut the hole in your motherboard tray yourself:D

You will not have to remove the cooler to clean it...I have been blowing mine out with compressed air for months.

Temps are great for me. Here is a shot at 100% load all day long Folding smp.

^^ Yeah the V8 really shines when it comes to load temps. I have never seen my 955be hit above 51c even when at 3.8ghz

I was mad when I had to pay $63 shipped versus $55 shipped. There was a period when the v8 prices where changing frequently (1-2months ago). Oh well I had bought something like $400 worth of parts so im not worried about $8

Just IMO:
Mega=Best, but expensive
True=Freakin awesome, just above the average cost mark
V8=Right in the affordable price range, but only looks good if there is red in the case
Noctua=Best for price, but put it in a case that doesn't have a window (ewww brown and light brown)
 
It's just one of those things that sticks out like a sore thumb to me... sorta like the Logisys LED fan I scrapped because it was more cyan than normal blue.

Yeah, the fan color doesnt change much.

For $40 i still probably wouldnt pick up a V8 personally, especially higher wattage cpu's like i7's.
