Question re: Windows 7 RC download / install

I'm downloading the Windows 7 RC right now into a folder via the install manager from the microsoft site. It says that it's in DVD format - and I've not used this technology for anything but recording movies.

1) Just wanted to confirm - that there isn't any kindof auto install when it finishes downloading. I'm not downloading it on my PC - b/c I don't have a DVD burner on my personal computer. If it's going to cause a problem - I can stop the download. It's a pretty slow download right now.

2) Once downloaded, Is it pretty simple to move the folder to DVD? I'm assuming I just drop and drag it to burn to DVD-R. Anything else I need to know?

it's just an .iso file, so yeah you'll need to burn it onto a dvd.

i use this program for burning iso's. it's fast, lightweight, and effective.
 
an install disk for an operating system needs to be burned as an .iso file. many software burners exist, but i would recommend deep burner for burner the .iso onto a dvd.

if you just drag and drop the file, all you get is the data from the .iso written onto the dvd, which is not what you are looking for lol.
 
Cool. It's downloading very slow - I may be checking back - later today - or tomorrow if I have any troubles burning this to DVD.

But to confirm - it's being downloaded as an " iso image " onto the PC - and a burner will burn that " iso image " onto the DVD media as an " iso image". ( ISO image is a new terminology to me )

When using this to install an O/S later - would I just insert the DVD into a DVD drive - and boot from that drive - and the rest will guide me along - similar to installing an O/S from a CD-R ?

yes:

-insert the dvd
-reboot the pc
-when it boots back up, it may say "press any key to boot from dvd" if it doesn't however you'll have to go into your bios and set your dvd drive to first priority in the boot menu.

Cool,

I had to do that with my current PC. Technology wise - I may not be able to use this O/S for a while - as I'm not sure the PC I wanted to test it on will handle windows 7. But When I get my first build going - I'll be able to defer the build cost of purchasing the O/S for about a year. :good:

what are the specs? windows 7 isn't a very demanding OS, it runs faster and uses less resources than both vista and xp.

Dell 4500
Pentium 4 - 1.8 ghz - ( 32 bit I think )
1GB DDR RAM
20 GB + 160GB HDD

or

Dell 2400
Pentium 4 x 2.8 ghz ( I think 32 bit )
2GB DDR Ram
80 GB HDD

Both are pretty basic entry level computers - pretty old though. The 2400 had a recent re-install of Windows XP - it's my everyday user for the most part right now.

I could purchase a DVD R/W drive ahead of my new build and try and install on this older one now - and move the DVD drive when I want to do the new build - but not sure if Windows 7 will work or not with this old a system that it'd be worth the hassle.

oh, yeah, backup your stuff before installing.
 
I think a lot of it depends on the server traffic to when your downloading. You figure most of the people are going to wait until the evening to download so it's not messing with while they're messing with their system. I downloaded my copy around lunch yesterday.
 
I downloaded it at work and we've two fiber lines, I hit over 2.8Mb/s. I haven't got to try it out because I am so busy lately, I HATE THIS TIME OF THE YEAR!
 
The fastest I ever download anything is 323 kbps.

The download ran full speed for me and I downloaded it early Tues. morning.

It took me a while to get logged in, but the download went without a hitch.

I see no issue with the Download Manager.
