If a computer has an AMD Athlon XP 2400+, 2.00GHz, and 480 MB of RAM about how fast should it run? Decently? Compariable to a Pentium 4? Thanks a bunch!

Depends which p4. Techincally, it should run pretty comparable to a p4 at around 2.3 ghz. Do you know the FSB of the AMD? what about the cache size?

My friend, if you have 480mb of Ram you have onboard video (32 mb).
Then...to make it run like a Pentium IV, just go buy a new (128mb or more DDR Ram) agp or pci video card (that way you gain 32mb without adding any Ram)...

the fsb should be 333 and a cache size of 512 for an athlon xp.

the onboard video card will limit your video capabilities of the system. it should compare to the older socket pentium 4's. definately not the socket T's. thats like comparing a sempron to a new pentium 4.

It's my aunt's computer actually. These friends of hers took her computer and put a bunch of crap in it and told her it should run like lightening. Well, it doesnt. She got what they said, a top of the line motherboard, and the things I said in the first post. It doesnt run fast at all. She also has cable internet through RoadRunner and the popups are INSANE. She has popup blocker software, and still the popups manage to get through. Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure you're thinking of an XP Barton. I have a 2700+ Thoroughbred with 166 FSB (I prefer the proper speed) and a 256 L2. I believe all Bartons have 166 or 200 FSB and a 512 L2 cache. I don't believe that they made 2400+ Bartons, so I'm pretty sure that that has a 256 L2.

it sounds like it might be more of a spyware or adware problem than a hardware problem... that setup should work at satisfactory speeds (not for heavy gaming or anything, mind you, but I'm pretty sure your aunt won't be doing a lot of that ;) )...

I would say if it is a spyware problem THAT serious, adware and spysweeper aren't going to eradicate it. Try them, but if they don't you may have to reformat.
