What hyperthreading does is improve performance on P4s under certain types of work loads. The detailed explaination along with reference links is seen at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperthreading

Page #37 in the owner's manual for a laptop explains a trip into the bios>advanced section and locating the option to enable hyperthreading there can be seen at http://www.eurocom.com/support/manuals/D4XEF_CUM.pdf

You will probably find a similar option in the bios on your board. This would be the place to look. If that option for some reason cannot be enabled normally there a need for a bios update would be the next step.

okay, how do I go about updating my BIOS?

BIOS Vendor Dell Computer Corporation
BIOS Version DELL - 7
BIOS Release Date 06/11/03

This is the info I have for BIOS.

For individual boards in custom built cases the user manual that comes with it or the online support site's downloadable pdf manual would give instructions there. For Dell you would look in the booklets that come along with the system to see if the system manual includes this information or refer to Dell's online support site to review any specifics on this. You do have to have the updated version on the root of the hard drive before running any tool; dos type boot floppy, Winflash, or auto flash option on system.
