Questions about dual and quad core

Okay, I'm confused about something.

If I have a 2.6GHz Dual-core, does that mean each core is 2.6GHz or each one is 1.3Ghz to give a total of 2.6GHz?
Is the answer the same with regards to Quad-core?

Thanks!

Basically yes, but with the way Windows XP works, you are never really doing just one task. A lot of things run in the background.

Hi, I am just curious is there any dual/quad core processor available on the market which has something similar to hyperthreading but the oppositte so that 2+ cores can run one application?

All duel core processors are like that :P It all depends on the software you're trying to run. If it's not designed to use both cores at the same time, it'll use only one.

No. Well, yes if the application is multithreaded, but you can't make 2x2GHz cores work at the equivalent of 4GHz by combining 2 cores for 1 thread.

also dont confused between true quad cores (eg Clovertown) and amd 4X4...which many call quad core :)

Thanks very much for all the replies, I understand now. Which would be better a single quad core CPU by Intel or an AMD 4x4 setup, I think it would work out much cheaper to buy a 4x4 setup by AMD but which one would perform better. Thanks very much in advance for any replies.

It would be way cheaper to buy a quad core intel than an AMD 4x4. For 4x4 you have to buy two Athlon FX7xs.

I think AMD is suppost to release the Quad core Barcelona this summer, Heard that AMD (claimed) that it would be 40% faster than intels quad
