Questions about my new PSU

I just received a Builder's Series 600w Corsair PSU in the mail today from Newegg. It's fresh out of the box and I'm eager to test it out but am afraid to blow something up.

At the moment I only have my case which also arrived today, as well as 2 sticks of RAM, which are useless at the moment. All these items were on sale at the time so that's why I bought them then.

How can I test the power supply with just the parts I have now? My case has 3 fans one of which has a Blue LED. The LED fan and the larger of the 2 others fans have 2 connectors. A male and female 4 prong of some sort, both connected to the same cord/wire. The other has a small 3 prong female connector which I assume plugs directly in my motherboard. Can I plug the 4 prong fans directly into my power supply and turn on the power supply? I don't know a whole lot about this and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the wall of text and thanks!!!

I don't think that would work. It will definitely not blow up anything if you try. You could go get a volt meter and test it that way. But it is a corsair, so its probably good.

Yeah. I figured it being a Corsair it was probably good but I would like to be a 100% sure before I send in my rebate.

So it's safe to try it at least?

With PSUs that are DOA does that mean they flat won't turn on or that they don't put out any power but still turn on? Or could it be either?

Also if I plugged the PSU into the wall and flipped it on but with it being plugged into absolutely nothing it would still be ok? Wouldn't damage it at all?

Sorry for all the questions but I do not want to break it. Again thanks!

There is no way to actually test it unless you have a psu tester or attach it to a completed build and do stress tests on it.

Yeah I realize that now. Didn't occur to me that you can't start a Power Supply without the power button being pushed on the computer. D'oh!

Thanks for the info!

You can do the paper clip trick. But all it does is makes sure it fires up. It puts no stress on the supply what so ever.

Ok. I looked it up and tried it. Nothing happened with the PSU. My lights in my room did flicker when I flipped the switch like they do sometimes when I start a vacuum or something like that. But absolutely nothing from the Power Supply. It didn't flicker before the paper clip trick though.

Green wire and a black wire?

Edit: Never mind. I plugged one of my fans in and it started right up. Thank you so very much StrangleHold! :)

Nope. I hooked it up to one of my fans because I read somewhere that it needs to have some sort of load. BAM blue light come on and spinning fan = happy Denther. It's possible that it started before that with no load because I noticed that the PSU fan is absolutely silent.

*shrug*

Either way thank you very much!
