Questions between two ps

Actually, you don't even need the adaptor, you can just plug the 20 pins into a 24 pin connector, leaving the others out. If you have a reasonably high powered system, however, it's likely that an old 20 pin supply will not provide sufficient power, particularly on the +12V line.

well the old 20 pin ps is from 2 years ago. it's a 500w atx, decent. well the reason i'm upgrading is because in the 4 extra pins there are 2 grounds that are necessary when running an X2 processor.

at least that's what i've been told by most people that i've talked to. i could be mistaken but i want to be sure that it works good and doesn't fry anything cause it's taken me a long time to save up enough money to fix this. my comp fried in the beginning of august and i've been using a mac crap laptop since for internet purposes.

The extra 4 pins consists of a 3.3V wire, a 5v wire, a 12V wire and a ground wire. They are simply to provide additional power. If you're using a reasonable high powered connection, it's quite possible to 'overload' a 20 pin connector, particularly in regard to the +12V rail if you're using at least a midrange PCI-E video card.

Are you perhaps talking about the 4 pin ATX12V connector (2 yellow +12V wires and 2 black ground wires)? This is not optional, and your system will not work if your old PSU does not have one of these (although there's an adapter for that too, but I wouldn't recommend using it).

well I'm probably going to be running:

this processor:

this video card:

if that helps you with helping me. i'm not very good at this yet i've been doing my research but it's not going that well because nothing i find is exactly what i'm looking for. (if that made any sense)
Definitely time to upgrade the PSU. The XClio I recommended earlier should do the trick, but would be about the smallest i'd recommend. You'd be better off to get a 7900GS than a 7800GT - cheaper and significantly better performance.
