questions on choosing video card

I am about to purchase a video card for my PC. I Dont want to spend alot and was wondering what I should look for in a card. How important is Memory, Bits, Clock speed Etc. I have a Wide screen monitor and watch alot of widescreen movies and would like to start playing some games. Im looking for bang for the buck here!! Any help would be greatly apreaciated

Biostar NF61S MB, PCI Express x16, 1GB DDR2 667, AMD Sempron 3400+ running at 2392mhz.
 
It's really a matter of everything, not one thing determines the performance of a card. For instance, a 512MB 8500GT is not better then the 256MB 7900GT. The best way to find out which card is better, is to compare the benchmarks of the two.
