Questions on setting up RAID

First of all, is RAID supposed to be set up before you have files on both harddrives? Or does it not matter? I have been using both harddrives seperately in my computer for a long time and I now just fancy RAID'ing them, or whatever.

Anyway, the harddrives are both Maxtor (I know they're shit, i was on a budget ;)), 160GB and 250GB, I know I can set up RAID as it mentions it when i boot-up, motherboard is ASUS P43-DS3L if that's needed.

I know there's different types of set-ups for RAID that are set by numbers, RAID 0, 1, etc. Which would be best for good speed but still decent reliabilty? Also how do I generally go about setting it up? :) Oh and finally what benefits if any will i see?

Raid needs to be setup before you install windows. First of all, you have 2 different size hard drives. When you raid you will be losing 90 gb of your 250 because you it takes the smallest size drive unless you have 2 drives the same size. If you want speed, you want raid 0 but there is no fault tolerance. Raid 1 allows for the fault tolerance but you give up a little speed, because it has to write and read data to both drives at the same time. Raid must first be setup in the bios and then you have to install the raid driver at the beginning of XP installation where it says "press f6 to install raid or scsi device."
