okay, so I'm building a computer again, and i have a quick question about OS security and such... Can I take a HDD out of a computer and put it into a completely different computer, re-register the OS and not lose any data in the whole process?

By re-register do you mean reinstall or something. If you format or reinstall os on same partition you will lose data.

no no no, I'm definitely not formatting, its just that windows (as far as i know) makes you register again if you have oh so many hardware changes..

If your trying to take a HDD out of one computer, and install it on another with a OS on it, and the new computer has a different motherboard and chipset, then you are asking for trouble. It is never a good idea to do it that way.

There could be, and probably will be all kinds of conflicts. The best way is to back up all of your data, reformat, reinstall the OS and then put your data back on the HDD.

And yes you will have to re register after.

Dear raoul_1101
The very important thing posted by paratwa is to take backup of your all data.
If your HDD have more than two partitions like C&D or C,D,&E. So, you can take backup of Data from C Drive(My Documents,Desktop, favorites,C Drive it self) to other drives.
After that you need to format only C drive and install XP in C drive. It'll be very easy for you.
