Quick question on manual focus lenses?

Whilst looking at some lenses, I notice the specs will say 'minimum focus distance' of like, 1 meter (for a cheap-o 18-55mm). But when I go to the store, look at the exact same lens and get close to an object, I can focus within 1-2.5 inches. What gives?

i'm not sure how big an inch is but i know its not as much as 1 meter. However, generaly a kit lens like an 18-55 zoom will focus down to about 25cm and at the 55mm end should give quite a close picture.
