Yeah you should be able to do that.

When you install an OS, the install utility will format the hard drive for you.
A hard drive has to be formatted in order for the operating system to be installed.

Think of formatting as those preprinted blue lines on looseleaf paper and in notebooks (the kind you write in). Those lines designate where you write.
With hard drives, formatting prepares the hard drive to store information.

It doesn't need to reformatted if you are repairing the OS.

Well if that was the case then it would need to be formatted.

If it has files on it - go right ahead and install the OS. No need to for a reformat.

Just be sure to select "Leave current File System" when you go through the install process.

If it already has music and pictures on it....then it is already formatted. You would need to install the OS to a blank section of the HD...an actual blank partition, not just free space on the drive. You are best off copying off your data, reformatting and installing, or resizing the partition and installing on the new partition.
Hope this helps.

The drive needs to be formated in either FAT32 or NTFS, but you don't need to reformat, although it's a good idea.
