Is it better to leave your computer running on standby when you are not using it(ie over night) or is it safer/better to shut it down for the night?

Ive heard many different things from my friends but i wanted to get some solid advice from some real pros :D

IMO I would shut it down at night, or anytime when you expect not to use it for several hours. If you are gone for a short time, say for lunch, then I would put it in standby mode.

thanks

thank you for the advice, im going to be building a new system in a few months and i want to do every thing i can to keep it at its peak performance as long as possible.

Agreed I would either shut it down or just leave it on. Thats what I do

sorry for the hijack, i didnt want to create a new thread about the same topic. :o

does this go the same too for laptops? i never shutdown my laptop i leave it on standby when not in use.

Im sure it applies. It's just a waste of electricity. Standby for me is kinda an inconvenience. I just leave my pc on and turn down the fans and shut off the monitor. PC's can handle it now days. But, with a laptop I would shut it down as they generally run hotter.

but when i leave my laptop on standby overnight, it doesn't give off any heat. the fan blows out very cool air.

^^ Oh well then it sounds ok then.

If anyone desires: You can disable/get rid of standby and it will save some wheres around 1.5gb

how?
