Basically once you have all the parts, hard drive, motherboard, video card, RAM, processor, PSU, case, sound card, you connect everything to the motherboard, connect the motherboard and hard drives to the power, insert fans, and connect the motherboard and hard drives to the case, correct? Is this all that is necessary, or am I missing some other steps?

Basically yes, But I suggest you read a few guides so you know all the little things, as they make a big difference.

This is how I do it.
1. Put in PSU
2. Put MOBO in case.
3. Put CPU in the MOBO and put HSF asembly on it.
4. Put RAM in MOBO.
5. Put HDD and Optical drives in case.
6. Plug any PCI or other cards into the MOBO
7. Plug any fans in.
8. Hook up any Drives and power cables.
I think that's it
