In what specific ways does the macbook help in university (eg. programs) - What makes it distinct from all other laptops?

And what's the difference between the new generation macbook and the last one? (There's a 300 dollar difference, and I want to know if it's worth my money...)

I will be buying a new laptop in June-August (Before University starts).

I was strongly considering getting an HP laptop, until I heard the strong review that macs had.

I will be using the laptop MOSTLY for schoolwork. I will also use it for listening to audios/music while I work, and maybe watch a couple videos while on the go.

Well what are your plans with it as far as school work? The price difference comes from a bunch of things like better graphics cards, SSD, multi touch mouse pad and a 1'' thick. On the program side of things they have really good but expensive video and music production software. If your just wanting to do class work and a nice laptop but at a better price I would go witht the hp or Dell. Or if you like the idea of a 1" thick metal body but want to stay Vista go with a Sony Viao, Very similar on system specs but for the price you can get blue ray.

It can't, its a mac.

On the real side.
They have good design programs (nothing like full AutoCAD) but good drawing and rough draft. They are usually small so easy to carry around, but mac's batteries hardly ever last more than 30min without a need of a recharge.
I would most probably go with a new Vista laptop to be honest.

agreed, mac=overpriced, good looking but very bad performance. Look at a sony, hp or possibly even dell laptop.

If you want the mac OS instead of windows you can alway go buy a laptop without an OS installed and buy a copy of OSX or something and install it yourself. It will probably cost more than buying one with preinstalled vista, but if it's what you want, then don't make compromises :P

If you want OSX then get a mac, the batteries last 4 hours on average. But in my opinion your about to go though college and you need to save money, You can get a really nice laptop for about 700$.
