This is probably a stupid question but can you use a Network Card/Ethernet card to access the internet with Dialup? Can it be used for a dialup connection or do you absolutely need a 56k modem? Thank in advance! :)

Well... Sort of, If you have a network you need a Modem in one computer to connect to the internet and then you can set it up so you use your NIC (Network Interface Card/Ethernet card) to access the network which you can connect to the dial-up connection.

And I know this works becuase I have done it :)

In short if you have a network you need one Modem in one computer not one in every single computer, connect to the internet.

But if it is a single computer not in a network than yes you need a modem in the computer.

For starters, the connectors would not be compatible. Ethernet uses a RJ45 connector, whereas the modem would use a RJ11 connector.

Hehe, when I began networking, I used my old emachines(K6-2 333MHz) that just had dialup and networked it to 4 other computers using a 10Mbps network and shared my internet using a proxy ;)

But yes, if you want dialup internet, you MUST have a phone modem.

I share a wireless connection with a computer through ethernet and it works fine. I would think it would work with dialup. It is just like "Emperor_Nero" said.
