Quickie question

Hey people ok quick question about thermal paste. Do I need to put it on the actual chip of the CPU or just the die of the CPU and if on the chip which kind should I use?

Use small dab in the centre...it will spread out after you attach your heatsink

And..arctic silver is great stuff

yeah but I saw someone put it on the chip of the CPU once so... I really don't understand why they did... and I know arctic silver is best :P cant wait till christmas for my new desktop....

I think there is alot of people that do it wrong or think more is better..

Just put a small dab in the centre...you dont need it shootin out the sides...:)
 
thats a something i have been meaning to ask, when you say put a small blob in the middle, does that apply to dual/quad core chips? or do you put 2 small blobs? (one over each core.
Sorry for the noob question.

It's funny, I've never actually thought this much about it..

I just put on a dab--enough to make a thin layer and then heatsink goes on.

applying the paste directly on the die allows for better cooling; however, you can only do this on old CPUs as all modern CPUs have this metal shim on top of the die which you can't take off (well you could on some Pentium 4s). I have two rigs with Pentium 3 coppermines, they both have bare dies.
