Just wondering how much improvement there would be going from a Radeon HD 4890 1GB to an XFX Radeon R9 270 Core Edition 925MHZ 2GB 5.6GHZ GDDR5 card. Worth the $180 Canadian?

My new gigabyte r9 280 oc crapped out already so I am going to get a refund and look at something different ($230 budget).

How did it crap out? Failure rates on cards is pretty low so you'd be fine to get another one, maybe from a different manufacturer though if you want. I personally prefer Sapphire for AMD cards.

It was artifacting and I was getting that "display error" message after it would just close out my games at random. I had the newest drivers installed and when I called the company I bought it through they told me that it must be overheating and it was a hardware issue.

Sounds like my RMA is going to be rejected because I didn't send the card back with all of the original packaging, etc... (it was all thrown in the garbage after the card was installed and was working properly).
So I may end up getting a partial refund on my week old card... uggg

God AMD's drivers must be horrendous for gaming at the moment - a lot of artifacting problems! Denther was having drier issues - he turned V-Sync off and it was all OK apparently.

If you've sent your card back it's too late, but if you haven't I'd recommend removing your existing drivers using the instructions here: http://www.computerforum.com/230259-pixelated-square-game.html#post1936172

And then install Catalyst 13.2 which you can download from here (dated 18th December 2013): http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/previous?os=windows+7+-+64

13.2 should work with your card. That driver was fine IIRC. I had 14.4 and 14.7 RC before I finally sold my 5870 and went back to NVIDIA and those drivers were both bad (14.4 is the latest stable release as of writing).

If this is a driver problem then getting a 270X probably isn't going to make any difference because the drivers are the same. The 280 is a much faster card so you might be disappointed by the downgrade in performance.

Eh, 'driver stopped responding' is usually more of a hardware than a driver problem to begin with.

I had the same issue with a brand new 7870 GHz on my dad's build a couple months ago. Replaced the card and it just worked.

You could also try pursuing the RMA from the vendor you bought it from.

It could be a problem with the card itself (and it isn't unheard of) but you should always try using different drivers first in case before you start spending time and money on RMAs and replacement cards.

The current stable drivers aren't the absolute best - they could well be the problem.

Thanks fellas. Yeah I am just pursuing the RMA at this point. It's really my only option so I'll just cross my fingers for a good card.

If it doesn't work properly right out of the box than I will try your suggestions Spirit.

You might haveve been unlucky and received a bad card so hopefully the replacement is better.
