Radeon 3870 X2 Driver problem

I recently started having an issue with the drivers for my videocard. I have a sapphire radeon 3870 x2 and I run windows vista business (32bit). The monitors will, seemingly at random, begin flashing and i will get a balloon in the bottom right that says "your video drivers have stopped responding" they will continue to flash on and off until I get a blue screen and the computer restarts. Once in a while i'll come back to the computer after having not used it in a while and it will say that the video drivers stopped responding and the system has recovered (i assume without a restart). Any ideas what could be causing this. I have the newest driver release.

i too have had major issues with 8.8. before with 8.7 i had some issues regarding fan speed, but for the 4870 its a known issue. i'd recommend reverting back to a previous driver, that's what i ended up having to do.

Ok, I rolled back to the drivers that came on the cd with the card. I will report back if the issue continues.

I have a 3870x2 and in some games like Company of heroes and crysis I get strange graphic glitches, kinda like tearing, and strange flickering. Any ideas?

Alrighty, hopefully that'll help.

Sounds to me that your card could be overheating or dying, one of the two. What temps do you run during idle and gaming? Do you overclock?

So I rolled the drivers back to the original version that was packaged with the card and the issues are still here. As a side note, this is my second card. The first fried after about 4 hours of use. It took me a couple of months to get a new one. Either way, there is a difference between how it acted with the new drivers and how it acts now. Now when the video drivers stop responding the computer is able to recover from the problem where as with the newest drivers the computer would actually crash and restart. Any Ideas?

Scratch that difference, my pc just crashed after the video drivers stopped responding. Any additional advice would be great.

Well short of updating all drivers and checking temps I'm not sure what to tell you man.. 3870 X2 is plagued with issues though. Just try doing every possible update including patching the games and see where that gets you.

BTW, what games are you trying to play? Do they support crossfire? Does your motherboard support quad crossfire? (It might support crossfire between two single cards, but it needs to support quad crossfire for any X2 series cards.)

Actually, It crashes when I'm on the desktop. I've never had it crash during a game. It always happens when the video card is sitting more or less idle. Sometimes it happens (not always) when i load the IM program Digsby. I don't know if there is something to do with the way digsby is rendered that might cause issues or what. It's just a really odd problem.
