radeon hd 4830??

If you going to be playing left 4 dead and source, get a HD 4670. It plays Cod4 Max @ 1024x768
 
Yeah, if you wait a little bit though the 4850 might drop down to your price range, right now they are around $130 after rebates and are a better card than the 4830(by a good amount, 640 vs 800 stream procs).
 
Seriously dude, its overkill for that resolution. Get a 9800 or 8800 or something that can also use CUDA (aka physX). Once you have 80FPS, anything additional is a waste of money. Almost any modern card 8+ series nvidia and ATi equivalent will get that on all games. Crysis will even play at that resolution on a 8800 on max/high. Don't waste your money on getting an expensive card for that resolution.
 
Does this mean that the op never plans on upgrading their monitor? Gotta think about games that will come out in the future also...
 
You don't buy current hardware for future games or possible future monitor purchases, the economics doesn't add up. You buy the best bang for buck now.

I won't be upgrading my monitor anytime soon because its still working good.

yeah I know its a big O difference but all i got right now is 120 unless i sell my jlw6 sub and get me a bad ass 260buck graphic card.
