Radeon HD 5870 and Skyrim

I think it's one of those games where people say "you need the fastest computer in the world to max it!" when really in reality you can max it on an overclocked 5770 for heaven's sake. :D

I run it on my 3870 on ultra on stock speeds. So yeah, not really a graphical demanding game on that front lol

yeah, I hit a steady 40~ fps. drops to 25 with lots of fire and stuff but most of the time it stays a nice 40 fps

Haha that 5770 didn't do too bad actually, better than expected. I still noticed some major glitches like pausing/stuttering but overall it was a decent performer. I would not say you need the fastest card out there to run certain games, but you will notice some changes in detail if you bump it up a little bit. You have to be fairly observant to notice these changes, but they are existant. If we're talking single player gaming modes in skyrim or mw3 you can definitely get away with using a low to midlevel gpu, but in multiplayer online games where the most tweaked pc's keep you in the game and happy.

There's little room for compromise in a heated multiplayer game - those pauses/artifacting/etc can and will give opponents an edge and get you killed time and time again. You can't have these video glitches going on, it gets in the way of playing and will in time frustrate you beyond belief. I know, firsthand exactly how that feels. An extreme 500-1000 dollar card isn't always necessary, but a powerful enough one to keep you glitch free and keep up with whatever game you're running is. Know what software you want to be running or which task is your main priority and shop accordingly.

The older gen cards are still fairly powerful and competitive with the game specs of today, but the main problem I see with them is there's no support for dx11, aging drivers, and in the case of say a 4870 you have larger heat issues to contend with. It especially becomes noticeable if you put it under the pressure of overclocking, so i'd make sure it's up to the software specs and you have a good cooling solution ready prior to buying.

Sometimes the software you use to record the games can bring the FPS down and make the game stutter and a lag tiny bit etc. But yeah, it was still a good performer. :)

I agree but the Evergreen cards with Denther and I use do have support for DX11 and AMD still produce drivers for the Evergreen cards.

I agree with you on the heat issues of older cards, some of the older NVIDIA cards especially (GTX 280/285 and GTX 480) are notorious for this. :/
