Radeon X800XL may you RIP

Well I'm not exactly the biggest computer geek on the planet although I'd like to think I have more smarts than the average user.

but thats beside the point, here it is, My Radeon X800XL is kicking the bucket after roughly 4 or 5 years of use. the fan is going to be exact. I have removed it and am currently using the "default" video card that came with the computer.

I was searching E-bay and found my same card for, at the cheapest, $60. Now I am Happy with how it performed, I am not a hardcore gamer and I don't buy the big $80 games (more for the simple reason I can't aford them and I just drool over the boxes at the store) So I would like to get a new card that is roughly the same quality as my Old one. But I would prefer to get it cheaper. Any suggestions?

And I gotta tell you, I'm realy sarting to miss my old Radeon. This Default video card wont even play video:eek: God help me I don't know if I can live much longer without a good video card!
 
an X16 PCI Express lane slot and I'm using a Gateway 840 GM (not Custom except for the Radeon I Installed When I got the system)
 
So basically you want to know, what's the best card you can get for..
what, $60?

Right now you can get a better card than what you had for less than that.

Bottom line, what's your budget. Open to Nvidia or sticking with ATI?
 
Well as long as the card is as good if not better I'll pay the $60 although I'd prefer around the $30-$50 mark. I'm open To any of the brand names Nvidia, ATI, Geforce, I'd like to saty away from the off brands in case something would happen to it and no one would know how to help me out. although I did have a good experiance with ATI. My Laptop I have currently have has a Nvidia and it looks great, so I'd be very comfortable with one of those too.
 
Well, ATI and Nvidia are the manufacturers of the chips (Radeon and GeForce, respectively) not the cards.

Brand names are like EVGA, Sapphire, BFG, etc.

Anyway, I can't really find anything ATI that's close to the specs of your card worth spending money on, tbh.

I can personally vouch for this card though, as I have one, and it smokes the card you have now.

Is the fan really as crappy as the reviews say it is? My radeon card ran very quiet and I sleep in the same room with it I would prefer not to have to turn my computer off every night to avoid an irritating fan. What are your thoughts on the fan?
 
What? Mine is very quiet.

I wouldn't vouch for a noisy card. Did you read all the reviews or just that one? lol

You should turn your pc off at night anyway, unless it's working for you somehow.

Fans don't last forever and there's no sense leaving them run all the time. IMO.
 
Ugh. Talk about "off name brand". What brand is that exactly?

I say it's junk.

It specs about the same as the card you're replacing though.

I personally would not buy that card.
 
It's looks alone kinda turned me off haha. it's not exactly a good looking or stylish card.:P

I think I may try the one you recommended. and I really like the free shipping part. Does the website take returns if It for some reason just doesn't work out?

Absolutely, and when that time frame runs out, EVGA will take care of you for 2 years from when you bought it, providing you register it with their site within 30 days of purchase, which is not a big deal.

I got one more question. What are the problems witha card running hot? can it affect the motherboard or other componints that ar in close contact to the card?
 
It doesn't run that hot for me. 60-70c.

Everyone has a different case with different amounts of cooling, so
this aspect will vary.

But, once you register the card at EVGA, you can download EVGA Precision.

This software tool will allow you to set custom fan speed profiles, and over
clock it if you want, so you don't have to worry about how hot the card is getting.

Tell that to my old 97' in my basement (back up computer) it's been running for probably a combined total of 7 years (I'd estimate the rest of the time it's been turned off or in storage) and it still runs and I have NEVER had to replace anything in it. Why don't they make them like they used to.
 
I hope you blow it out once in a while anyway. lol

I was just saying...that's why I don't. Put them to
sleep is what I prefer.
